There may not be rivers of chocolate, lollipop flowers or golden tickets, but just north of Hamilton city and nestled in the heart of the Waikato, is New Zealand’s own little chocolate factory – Waikato Valley Chocolates. There you will find passionate chocolatiers working their magic to produce quality chocolate products that have been tantalising the taste buds of chocolate lovers across the country for the past 24 years.

Producing chocolate-coated blueberries and nuts, to Moa eggs, chocolate bunnies and the infamous ‘Biggy Piggy’ (1.25kg of chocolate goodness for Easter sharing), this little chocolate company has set its roots in New Zealand. Employing over 40 locals, the objective is simple; to create great tasting chocolate, at an affordable price, that Kiwis will continue to love.

Chocolate made in New Zealand.

Crafted by kiwi chocolatiers.

Individually wrapped by hand.

“We’re innovative Kiwis with a sustainable approach to affordable chocolate for all New Zealanders”, says Director Mike Razey, who has been with the company since its opening. “I’m old enough to retire; I just don’t want to – I love what we do.”

Paving the way to innovation, not only did the company introduce licensed Easter product to our shelves, but their Partnership with Kinnerton in the UK has filled a gap for many chocolate lovers with allergies. The Kinnerton Just range ensures Kiwis with allergies are still able to enjoy chocolate not only at Easter, but all year round.

Delivering a good quality, reasonably priced product is not always an easy feat, especially when you are competing with international companies mass producing product.  “Kiwis supporting local is crucial to our business; it allows us to go up against the international companies”, says Razey.  While other companies automate their chocolate making process, Waikato Valley chocolatiers hand create, wrap and pack each individual treat.

So, as Easter quickly approaches and shelves are stocked with delicious treats for the whole family, keep an eye out for the local Kiwi company specialising in quality chocolate, that is carefully crafted by New Zealanders for New Zealanders.
