You will need
- Old flower pot or suitable container
- Pom poms or cotton wool
- Felt in a natural colour
- Hot glue gun (supervision needed) or a suitable adhesive
- Optional: Paint
- Optional: Easter eggs for decoration
Instructions:
1. Begin by choosing a plant pot to upcycle. You can use one that already contains a plant or start entirely from scratch - your only limit is your imagination.
2. If you want to paint your plant pot, now is the best time to do it. Or, if you’re going for a natural look, move on to the next step.
3. Create your bunny bottom using pom poms or cotton wool. Make a large ball for the bottom and a smaller one for the tail, and glue them into place.
4. Cut your felt in the shape of rabbit feet, adding pink circles to create the toe details. Glue these in place.
5. Add easter eggs or any festive decor you’d like to include, arranging it to ensure everything is visible.
6. Position your bunny flower pot somewhere it can be enjoyed, ensuring it’s out of reach of small children and pets.
Decorated Eggs
Decorating easter eggs is a fun and festive Easter tradition and a creative activity that the whole family can enjoy. The method for decorating eggs can vary from one home to the next - hollow or hard-boiled, food colouring or dye - experiment to find out what works best for your whanau.
If this is your first time decorating eggs with the kids, here's a step-by-step guide to get you off to a good start.
You will need
- Hard-boiled eggs
- Food colouring
- White vinegar
- Paper towels
- Small bowls
- Toothpicks or paintbrushes
- Stickers, tape or rubber bands (optional)
Instructions:
1. Start by hard-boiling your eggs and allowing them to cool.
2. Mix one tablespoon of white vinegar in small bowls or cups with 20-40 drops of food colouring.
3. Fill the bowls with enough water to cover the eggs.
4. Using a toothpick or paintbrush, draw patterns or designs on the eggs with the food colouring mixture. Alternatively, for a more uniform look, you can place stickers, tape or rubber bands around the eggs before dipping them in the food colouring mixture.
5. Carefully place the eggs into the bowls, ensuring that they are fully submerged in the dye mixture.
6. Allow the eggs to soak in the dye mixture for 5 to 10 minutes, depending on the desired colour intensity.
7. Using a tissue or paper towel, gently pat dry the eggs before removing any stickers or rubber bands.
8. Enjoy your finished Easter eggs by displaying them in a decorative dish.
Advanced Easter Egg Decorating
Ready to take your easter eggs to the next level? Why not try this take on Ukrainian Pysansky eggs? Using layers of wax and dye, this method allows you to create beautiful, intricately decorated eggs (and can quickly become an addictive hobby for adults and children alike).
Pysasnky eggs traditionally use a tool to apply melted wax to the shell, which prevents it from absorbing dye. The process is repeated with different layers of wax and dye so that when the wax is finally removed, it reveals a design. While traditional Pysanka is created using special tools, you can have a go yourself using items around your home.
Please note: this craft should only be carried out with adult supervision.
You will need
- Raw, room-temperature eggs
- A candle
- Paintbrush or crayon
- Food colouring or dye
- Jars for dye
- Paper towels
Instructions:
1. Start with raw, room-temperature eggs. The weight of the yolk helps the eggs during the dying process.
2. Lightly sketch your design with a pencil, thinking about how you’d like to use colour to make your design pop.
3. Using either a crayon or your paintbrush and candle wax, retrace the sections of your design you want to protect from the dye.
5. Repeat the process.
6. When you’re happy with your work, gently heat the egg over your candle to melt the wax, then wipe it off with a paper towel.
