Most people think of New Zealand as a group of remote South Pacific islands with no native mammals except a few bats. In fact, these islands are only part of a much wider New Zealand Region that includes a large chunk of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. In that huge area there is, besides the two living resident bat species, a large and vigorous assembly of 58 native marine mammals (4 fur seals, 5 true seals, 1 sea lion and 48 dolphins and whales). This book explains why we have so few land mammals, and, by contrast, celebrates the wonderful diversity of our rich and little-known heritage of native marine mammals.
