Bedding Buying Guide
Sheets
When buying new sheets, consider the following:
Fabric:
- Polyester Cotton Blend sheets offer an easy-care, value option.
- 100% Cotton sheets are popular because they are natural, softer, and breathes.
- Percale (a term used to describe a fabric 180 thread count or higher). Percale is a smooth fabric of especially high quality and is generally less likely to pill than other types of woven fabric.
- Flannelette sheets are cotton or polyester that has been vigorously brushed to create a ‘furry’ surface for extra warmth. A winter product only
Thread Count:
- Refers to the number of threads woven within a certain area of fabric. The higher the thread count, the tighter weave resulting in a better end product that is softer and more durable.
Quality Control:
- We test all our sheeting ranges for shrinkage, colour fastness, and performance to ensure they wash and wear well. Maison d'Or Manchester comes with a 2-year guarantee.

Avoid overloading the washing machine to prevent creasing and wear to the fabric.
When each cycle has finished remove the bed linen promptly from the machine and shake out whilst damp to minimise the creasing and drying time. Do not dry your bed linen for longer than necessary.

Our range of Mink-Feel Blankets provide additional all year around colour and warmth for the bedroom. There are options for every budget - Necessities at great everyday value, Living & Co for fashion contemporary colours and Maison d’Or for a plush neutral look.
Duvet Covers
Duvet Covers are essentially a decorative protector for your duvet inner and are a great way to add colour and personality to your bedroom. It is an easy way to change the look and feel of your bedroom and there is an option available for every budget. Duvet Inners need to be protected from the environment, dirt, natural oils, the family pet and other allergy causing irritants and a duvet cover is much easier to launder than the inner.
General Care
Always wash before first use.
Avoid overloading the washing machine to prevent creasing and wear to the fabric.
Duvet Inners
When buying a new duvet inner, consider the following:
Weight Types:
The warmth, weight and softness of the duvet inner that you are considering purchasing will depend on the outer and the fill weight.
- All seasons – allows for greater flexibility as this weight will see you through most weather conditions throughout the year.
- Summer – a lighter weight option for the hotter months.
- Winter weight – heavier weight fill for warmth through the colder parts of the year.
Construction:
- Channelled construction - two layers of fabric sewn with straight lines from one end to the other. This is the most common and cheapest option but limits lofting properties and the breathability of the fill.
- Baffled or Boxed - walls are present between the two layers of outer fabric to create compartments, fill is able to loft properly and ensures even fill coverage as the fill cannot move. Product manufactured in this manner is more expensive - this is the chosen method of construction for our Maison d’Or down/feather and down alternative product.
Ultra Fresh treatment:
- This anti-microbial treatment, as a minimum, will protect against bacteria and asthma causing allergies and is applied to our Living & Co. and Maison d’Or ranges of duvet inners.
Quality Control:
- We test for outer shrinkage, confirm antimicrobial inhibition where product has been treated with Ultra Fresh, confirm fill composition where applicable and overall performance to ensure they will perform well..
Mattress & Pillow Protectors
When buying a new mattress or pillow protector, consider the following:
Fill:
- Synthetic fill – a hypoallergenic option which ensures that most mattress protectors can be washed. Fill and outer are quilted together primarily to keep the fill in place.
Construction:
- Flat or fitted construction? Flat mattress protectors have elastic straps that can be secured around each corner of the bed whereas fitted mattress protectors have a fitted skirt.
Ultra Fresh treatment:
- This anti-microbial treatment, as a minimum, will protect against bacteria and asthma causing allergies and is applied to our Living & Co. and Maison d’Or ranges of protectors.
Quality Control:
- We test for outer shrinkage, confirm antimicrobial inhibition where product has been treated with Ultra Fresh, confirm fill composition where applicable and overall performance to ensure they will perform well..
Pillow
A good pillow is not only comfortable but also supportive for your head and neck. To find the ideal pillow for you there may be some experimentation involved but it will be worth it in the end. When buying a new pillow, consider the following:
Fill Type:
- Natural - down & feather, wool, or cotton.
- Synthetic - polyester fibre or microfibre.
- Blends - usually with a natural fibre that doesn’t loft well, like wool or cotton.
Sleeping Position:
How do you fall asleep? Rule of thumb:
- Soft - for front or stomach sleepers and for those who like to pull their pillow around their head.
- Medium - for back sleepers or if you change position.
- Firm - for side sleepers.
Pillow Use:
- Support - usually made from foam or rubber and can be shaped to provide firm support for targeted areas like the neck or lower back.
- Decoration - extra pillows add drama to the bed. The Euro pillow (square shaped) has grown in popularity as a decorative pillow.
- Sitting up in bed - like reading, eating or watching TV in bed? V-shaped pillows or large Square pillows provide great support for this.
Ultra Fresh Treatment:
- This anti-microbial treatment, as a minimum, will protect against bacteria and asthma causing allergies and is applied to our Living & Co. and Maison d’Or ranges of pillows.
General Care
Follow wash care instructions - most pillows are washable. It is important to ensure the pillow is completely dry before using to avoid mould growth and clumping.
