How to Layer Clothing Like a Pro: Tips for Styling in Cooler Weather
Navigating the minefields of Aotearoa’s weather patterns can be a challenge even for the most seasoned stylers among us. We’ve all been warned that Wellington needs windproof layers, and that your simple cable knit won’t cut-it against Auckland’s coastal breeze - but how do we achieve the precarious balance between practicality and pizazz?
Layers. A simple word on the surface but a daunting reality when it comes time to put into practice. Layering is an art form, and much like any other art, you must start by nailing the basics. That’s why we’ve put together a go-to-guide for layering like a pro. From building a fool-proof foundation layer to the do’s and don’ts of oversized clothing – we’ve got you covered for your winter weather wardrobe planning.
The Base Layer
The most important part of your look (practically speaking) is always going to be your base layer. There are a few key markers you want to look for when selecting this layer to ensure it provides the best foundation possible for the rest of your look.
What to look for:
Slim fitting and breathable: Think merino wool. thermals, turtlenecks, bodysuits etc. This layer should sit close to your skin and provide good insulation for everything on top.
Neutral tones: You have plenty of room for colour pops and patterns later in your outfit building, keep your base layer neutral for versatility.
The Mid Layer
Visibly the warmest layer, this is where you can really start to be playful with your look. Depending on your personal style, there are many ways you can bring to life key mid-layer items such as chunky cardigans, knitted vests, cropped pullovers and fleeces.
Knitted vest and oversized shirt: This combination can be dressed up or down. Great for the office, pair a plain oversized shirt with a patterned or textured knitted vest and you’ve got yourself an effortlessly chic combo that can be worn with jeans, leggings or a skirt and boots.
Cardigans, Shackets and Fleeces: With your base layer providing insulation, your mid layer can be scaled based on the needs of the day. Go for an oversized shacket and jeans during autumn, or a half buttoned, cropped cardigan with a skirt during winter . The options are endless!
The Top Layer
The finishing touches are what make the difference between simply wearing a look, and styling one. If you opted for an understated mid layer, the top layer is where you can choose to really shine. If your mid layer is a showstopper, stick to more simple silhouettes.
Staple top layers: Trench coats, oversized leather jackets, long wool coats and oversized blazers are just a few examples of top layers that don’t overcomplicate a look. Their structured silhouette flatters a layered look. You can let the inner layers peak through or use a belt to add shape.
Finishing touches: Don’t forget to elevate your look with accessories! Gold hoops, an oversized scarf, chunky rings or a baseball cap can bring any winter look to the next level.
